In all classrooms each student has different ways in which they learn best. Whether it be aural, visual, kinesthetic, tactile, or a combination of these learning styles; it is my responsibility as the teacher to assess my students' learning styles and tailor my instruction to have the most positive impact for my students. Without hesitation I will take time outside of class to help my students succeed. In my classroom student success comes first, because their success breeds ensemble and program success. Academic and social accomodations will also be made for exceptional students; whether that be tailoring group work or proximity to the director or a para-professional within the ensemble. Even in music, students learn in different ways. It is crucial that the teacher use their knowledge of learning styles and teaching pedagogies in order to set their students up for success.
The attached video is an example of me teaching high school students about improvisation, some students are picking it up through aural learning styles, some are tactile, and some are kinesthetic.
