The candidate uses understanding of differences in individuals, cultures, and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet rigorous standards.
As the teacher, it is my responsibilty to not only create an environment that welcomes everyone, but it is also my responsibilty to foster this attitude within my students. Music is a universal language, and in my music classroom all cultures, ethnicities, and home backgrounds will be welcome. Through Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, I plan to create lessons and performance opportunities that are inclusive of cultures outside the western music tradition. I also plan to use my students' knowledge to help myself and the ensemble better perform pieces of music from different cultures around the world. It is important to remember, however, that there are standards that must be met by the school, school district, and nation (NAfME). While aiming to meet these standards, carefully drawing upon student knowledge and life experience can only help the students achieve at a high level.
