The candidate works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, includes teacher and student use of technology, and encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
A music classroom is a prime place for both individual and collaborative learning. Whether a student is working on a solo piece, or the wind ensemble is rehearsing, learning is taking place. Social interaction is also taking place, students are non-verbally communicating with each other as they work together to make music. This positive interaction will, hopefully, create an attitude of motivation among the students as they strive for musical excellence. The use of technology in my classroom will also be important, drawing on recordings of pieces, videos of rehearsals, and technological rehearsal tools will help me and my students continue to grow musically. Technology does have its place, but a level of accountability and self-discipline must be met. Texting, social media, and games will not be allowed during rehearsal time. If necessary technology use may be restricted, if a student is using their phone as a tuner or metronome, I welcome that. However, during rehearsal, technology is used to aide us, not hinder our pursuit of musical excellence.
