The candidate understands how to engage learners through interdisciplinary lessons that utilize concept based teaching and authentic learning experiences to engage students in effective communication, collaboration, outside resources, reading, technology, and in critical and creative thinking.
In the music classroom, there are many ways to engage students. Whether that be through ensemble opportunites, clinic sessions, or non-performing classes such as music theory, or sound design. In these classes it is also important to branch outside the traditional assessment/performance setting that is used in music classes. For example, in a sound design class the students could use GarageBand or a recording program to create an arrangement or high quality recording of a performance. This project could be used in place of a written exam. The skills needed to successfully complete this project then become the application of the knowledge the students would only write about on paper. This is also a great way to integrate technology into the music classroom. A non-traditional assessment project is also a positive way to keep the students engaged in the content. Exams, for some students, can become boring or monotonous; as their music teacher/conductor it is my responsibility to guide my students engagement and help them along, but not to decide everything for them. Music is an interpretive subject, and it is very personal. A more personalized project helps to keep the students more engaged.
Artifacts attached include a rubric for a cover band project, as well as a video of the final product some colleauges and I put together as an example for our students.
