In a music classroom, students consistently draw upon their knowledge of math, history, reading skills, and language skills. It is important for me as the teacher to guide my students to make these cross-curricular connections. I plan to be in consistent communication with my fellow teachers, discussing their content and working on ways to connect it to the content being learned in my classroom. A prime example of this is fostering discussion of notes, rhythms, and phrases within a piece of music. Just as an author uses letters, words, and sentences to tell their story. Composers use individual notes and rhythms to create musical ideas that flesh out into phrases; these tell the musical story. It is not only important for me to show these connections, but I must also help my students develop these skills for themselves.
